Sonnet on an Abusive Companion

Sweating on a stationary bike, I

look over the pool, see out of nowhere,

You, on your knees, like you knelt facing me

When you prayed that we wouldn’t have nightmares.

Sunlight reflects off your porcelain face

Dark hair falls toward water, you test the chlorine

Innocent, I should have fled your iron embrace

Your attempts to love me, putrid and green.

Commanded to love you. Lord, I obeyed.

I had never loved a nightmare before

Now a pool worker kneeling is your shade—

No. You would never help others stay pure.

On Facebook, I see you love your baby

But Lord, I pray not the way you loved me.
